Local Conditions/Reports

July 5, 2010

STEELHEAD: Washougal and E. Fork Lewis River - Rivers  are in great shape now and the summer steelhead are in the river.  Get out there and make a report.

TROUT: Many local lakes such as Coldwater, are doing well. Battle Ground, Kress, Merrill, Goose and Wilderness Lakes are producing fish.

KALAMA:
Some of the finest fishing for steelhead on the west coast comes from this lengendary stream and it's only 25 min. from town. My first steelhead that I landed after moving to Wa. some 32 yrs. ago came from the Kalama, not my very first steelie but one I'll never forget. There's something special about a steelhead on the fly even after 40 yrs.now and 2,000 fish later each is still a treasure and one of the great thrills in all of flyfishing.

N. Fork Lewis River -
The N. Fork is an often overlooked river by fly anglers yet the lower river offers many miles of water suitable for swinging flies for steelhead and salmon. There are several good floats on the river. I've had several reports of angling success.  This is a tailwater fishery that never gets to low and stays nice and chilly. The N. Fork also has one of the largest runs of steelhead of any of the westcoast streams and it's right in our backyard !

E. Fork Lewis River -
Only 9 miles from the Greased Line it's still a fine steelhead stream. . My personal best in Wa. came from here and to a skating dry fly! Also the states largest steelhead was landed on this gem.

Washougal River -
It's a near twin to it's sister stream  the E. Lewis in size and water flow and still pumps out some the finest June and July fish of any of our local fisheries. This river picks up with the rains that start in Sept. and fishes well throughout the winter and spring.

Klickatat River
Open for whitefish only December 31st - March 31st. Trout, steelhead and salmon  regs need to be checked out. Be sure to check the WDFW for special rule changes.  Be aware of glacier melt during warm weather as the water tends to become cloudy.

check requlations for the Klickitat.

Kress Lake -
Kress Lake is open year around and is stocked by WDFW with trout, bass and steelhead on a regular basis. With easy access, an improved trail around the lake and restroom facilities this is an excellent place to take the kids out and introduce them to the sport. As an added bonus, at times, you can watch the eagles and ospreys perform aerial battles for fish.

Klineline Pond -
Klineline is open year around and  is another great location for taking the kids with very easy access. It is located right off I-5 in Vancouver and has excellent facilities. It is stocked by WDFW with rainbows.

The little ponds behind Klineline can offer the angler the opportunity to target some bluegill, bass and crappie.

Merrill Lake -
Fishing at Merrll has been good at the lake and you are able to drive down to the lake.  The hex hatch should start any day with the warmer weather coming.  Wooley buggers, caddis flies and ants have been working well.

McBride Lake -
This lake no longer exists after being filled in by a mud flow off Mt. St. Helens..

Goose Lake
Fishing is going really well as 6,000 browns and cuts were planted two weeks ago.  Olive wooley buggers, ant patterns and Royal Wulfs have been working well.

Deschutes
Fishing on the river has been producing trout. .  The use of pheasant tails, prince nymphs and other nymphs always are good on this river.  Be aware that late morning and early afternoon can sometimes produce BWO & PMD hatches.  Steelhead fiishing should be picking up shortly.

Central Oregon Lakes
The lake fishing is getting cool at night.  If you are going to go you need to get out there soon or it will be cold.
